PRACTICAL STEPS FOR CULTIVATING OUR GOALS
In essence, there are two practical steps for cultivating our health goals in a truly effective and fulfilling way. The first step plants the seed in fertile ground, and the second step brings the energy of the seed out into the world.
STEP #1: Bring the Goal to Life through the Dance of Generosity and Integrity
Bringing the goal to life is about getting clarity on what we really want to cultivate – on what our goal actually is. When we feel frustrated or stuck in our life, it’s usually for one of two reasons – either we don’t know what we really want, or we have ideas but we aren’t clear on how to go about cultivating them. Many of us expend so much energy trying to figure out the right path to take and the right things to do, but we make our efforts without having real clarity on why we are doing it in the first place. This leads to uninspired action. In my experience, when we truly have clarity on our goal, the path reveals itself. We don’t have to figure it all out; we just have to get clear on what we really want.
How do we get clarity on our goals? By changing our focus. Wherever we direct our focus is where we will have clarity. If we focus on our problems, we will have great clarity on what we don’t want in our life anymore. To get clear on our goals, however, we must shift our focus to what we do want to cultivate, rather than on what we are trying to get away from.
Our mind is constantly asking itself questions and giving itself answers. This is how it works and how it helps us to function in everyday life, and it does this so much that we usually aren’t aware of it. For example, if you aren’t sure that you agree with this, your mind will ask “Is this true? Do I agree with this?” It will then search through its catalog of experiences in order to give itself an answer. Our focus is determined by the types of questions we ask ourselves, and if we want to change our focus, then it’s important that we change the nature of our questions.
When we feel uninspired or stuck in our lives, it’s because we have gotten into the pattern of asking disempowering questions. Here are a few examples:
Why is this happening to me?
Why can’t things be easier?
Why do I keep going through the same thing, over and over again?
Why is losing weight so difficult?
Why are relationships so frustrating?
Why is there never enough time in the day to get everything done?
Why can’t I control my temper?
Why am I always so tired?
Why can’t I get past this depression?
Why do I have such a hard time getting motivated?
